Description
From Buck Rodgers serials in the 30's to the latest Star Wars episode, film audiences have flocked to science fiction movies. What is the attraction? How do films of the future relate to life in the contemporary world? Why do they appeal to both technophobes and science geeks as well as to the general audience? Join us for an exploration of the possible reasons why sci-fi remains one of the most enduring of cinematic genres. The class will take a look at the manifold representations of outer space found in such films as The Day the Earth Stood Still, Forbidden Planet, Bladerunner, Starship Troopers, The Matrix, and War of the Worlds. If you love sci-fi, this will be a great opportunity to share your passion. And if you don't, come see what the fuss is all about! Dr. Tom Sobchack is a Professor Emeritus from the U's Division of Film Studies.
