LLHU 337 - Understanding Islam

At no time in recent history has the understanding of other cultures and ideologies been more important than now. Islam has been at the forefront of the news for several years, and the myths and prejudices that currently surround this religion and the people who practice it are indicative of a general lack of information. In this class, we'll learn about Islam: its development as a world religion, the fundamentals of Islamic belief and values, and how Muslims view themselves and others. Our discussions will reflect objective and critical views derived both from the Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. We'll also talk about cultural and moral clashes with other cultures and values, especially with those of the West. A trip to a local mosque will allow participants to observe a social event. Haider is a native of Bangladesh. He holds an MA in history and is a PhD candidate in Arabic and Islamic studies. Haider has been teaching at the university level since 1983, including assignments in Canada, Uganda, and Utah.
