Description
This course examines the development of religions, nation states, and understandings of the natural world through the seventeenth century. We follow these themes, from 1700 to the present day, with emphasis on the emergence of modern science and its relationship to technology. We will discuss the development of democratic systems of governance and human rights. All of these elements will be brought to bear upon questions of ethical decision-making and the rights and roles of women and minorities in society. This course emphasizes careful reading, critical thinking, and good writing.
