Description
This course explores speech perception from a social-cognitive perspective and examines how social influences affect how we process, understand and evaluate spoken language. Topics include variable speech perception, perceptual learning, perception of regional and sociolectal varieties, processing costs and biases associated with unfamiliar accents, voice perception and attractiveness, accentism and linguistic stereotyping.
