SW 7122 - Scholarly Writing and the Critical Review of Academic Literature II

This course introduces students to the processes involved in submitting and reviewing journal articles. It introduces the political economy of academic discourse, addressing dynamics that influence editorial decision-making and economic considerations that can determine the fate (and content of journals). We will discuss the workings of copyrights and the relationship between authors and publishers. Students will review drafts of articles in their chosen fields and conduct peer reviews of their work-in-progress. (1) Academic Discourse: students will participate in the review of a manuscript submitted for publication (under the instructor’s supervision (2) Writing Practice: Continue work on publishable manuscript with the goal of completing a first draft. (3) Mechanics and Craft: Writing as Thinking, developing a unique (professional) voice; (standing out from the crowd). Students will complete a first draft of a publishable manuscript. This document will be workshopped in class. Evaluation will be based on: manuscript, peer feedback, and journal review.
