Description
This course provides an overview of the qualitative methods that are used most commonly by planners and designers in urban research. Each session will focus on a specific qualitative method which includes a discussion of rationale, data collection, analysis, technique, contextual application, protocols, and issues. Over the semester, qualitative methods will be discussed in terms of larger research design and methodological strategies and illustrated with models and cases to provide examples. Issues of voice, subjectivity, culture, identity, and assumptions will provide a contextual filter for the qualitative researcher in choosing and applying specific methods. Students will apply several methods over the course of the semester.
