PRTS 1304 - 001 Backcountry Ski Wasatch
Course content will focus on avalanche awareness (rescue, terrain, weather, snowpack, and decision-making/human factors), side-country ethics, choosing appropriate tours, navigation, basic 1st aid, and field repairs. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in this course. This course will focus on leadership within recreational backcountry travel, analysis of stability, decision-making, snowpack metamorphosis, terrain features, safe travel, human factors, and rescue scenarios. Students must be capable to travel in variable snow conditions in steep terrain with backcountry skis/skins, snowboard/splitboard, or snowshoes. Students must have completed PRTS 2007 in order to enroll in this course. This course will focus on leadership within recreational backcountry travel, analysis of stability, decision-making, snowpack metamorphosis, terrain features, safe travel, human factors, and rescue scenarios. Students must be capable to travel in variable snow conditions in steep terrain with backcountry skis/skins, snowboard/splitboard, or snowshoes. Students must have completed PRTS 2007 in order to enroll in this course. If you have not taken PRTS 2007, but have taken an Avalanche Level 1 of American Avalanche Association standards and would like to enroll, contact Nate Furman with questions at nate.furman@utah.edu. Completing PRTS 2008 and PRTS 2009 will result in a Recreational Avalanche Level 2 completion. Class meets on-campus on Jan 17 only. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be Jan. 20-22.
