Description
This course is required for selected Ph.D. students. You will be required to work as a TA for academic credit towards your degree, instead of receiving financial compensation. Pedagogy: This course consists of two elements: practical and informational learning. Through practical experience and guided feedback, the students will be able to lead their own classes. Informational learning will be provided through lectures where the students will be exposed to basic elements of pedagogy particularly applied to the context of engineering and sciences. Practical learning will be provided through in-classroom teaching experiences, e.g. holding recitation sessions or leading laboratory sessions. As part of this, the students will work closely with the instructors responsible for the course, as well as with the other faculty involved with the courses wherein the student will be assisting so to provide for an integral and personalized experience. Students will have the opportunity to lead their own classes (including formal teaching evaluations), they will also receive guided feedback on their classroom teaching skills, and they will have the opportunity to participate in discussions with expert engineering faculty from both inside and outside of the university. The course will consist of 2-6 weekly hours of active classroom practice, as well as 1 weekly hour of training and 1-2 hours of personalized mentoring (depending on the credit load the students are taking the course).
