PRTS 1304 - 001 Backcountry Ski Wasatch
Course content will focus on avalanche awareness (rescue, terrain, weather, snowpack, and decision-making/human factors), side-country ethics, choosing appropriate tours, navigation, basic 1st aid, and field repairs. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in this course. Previous Avalanche Education and basic touring experience are strongly encouraged. Class meets on-campus on Jan. 26th only. Attendance for the first class is mandatory. Interested in becoming a ski guide or being able to take on more of leadership roll in the backcountry? Students will experience a rigorous 3-day training in ski guide techniques, including avalanche, mountaineering, navigation, and search and rescue fundamentals. Backcountry ski/snowboard and avalanche experience is required. Completing Avalanche Level 1 is a pre-requisite. Students should expect a physcially challenging experience and should be comfortable skinning 3,000-4,000 feet a day. Class meets on-campus on Jan. 27th only.
