OSHER 618 - Jazz: An Introduction and History of an American Original

This course will present an introduction to America's original art form -- jazz. Students will be exposed to the essence of the music, its unique elements, and to the multitude of jazz styles that have been part of its history. We will discuss the principle developers and performers of the music and samples of their contributions to the art as well as the history and evolution of this 100 year old music. Class members will be encouraged to attend live musical presentations as well as listen to excerpts of the music discussed in class.
