Description
The Criminal Process Course includes lecture, discussion and role-playing exercises to prepare students for handling criminal cases. This course will also explore the criminal justice system including social science perspectives on that system and lawyers' roles in the criminal justice system. This course must be taken during both Fall and Spring Semesters and is not open to other students without instructor permission. The Trial Advocacy Course (which prepares students for oral advocacy through role playing exercises) is required prior to the clinic. Enrollment preference will be given to students who have completed all prerequisites and students may be permitted to enroll concurrently in the Clinic and Trial Advocacy only on a "space available" basis and with professor permission.
Students may benefit from enrolling in other criminal law courses (e.g. Criminal Procedure, Sentencing & Corrections) and skills courses (Skills). For more information regarding a criminal clinic placement, see Clinical Program Brochure.
Participation in the Criminal Defense Component combined with study in the Lawyering Skills Cornerstone has been approved as a Service Learning class by the Bennion Center.
