OSHER 615 - Classic Romantic Films

This course will explore some of the classic romantic motion pictures from the silent era through the outstanding works of the sound era. Films include: 7th Heaven with Janet Gaynor & Charles Farrell; Sunrise with Gaynor and George O'Brien; Flesh & the Devil with John Gilbert and Greta Garbo; and The Son of the Sheik with Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky. The AFI's (American Film Institutes) 100 Greatest Love Stories will also be discussed with additional titles the instructor has a special passion for, such as Young Bess, Kordaa's The Thief of Bagdad, The Red Shoes, and Jack Weyland's Charly. Many recognized actors are included in these films. The role of film music and cinematography will be explored. Special fee includes loan of DVDs so that class members will have the opportunity to actually watch a number of great films. Students will also have the opportunity to experience select romantic silent films with live theatre organ pipe scores at The Organ Loft in the evening. The $5.00 charge for each film at the Organ Loft can be paid at the door.
