Description
YTC is an intensive, performance-oriented program for our most advanced students. The student-to-teacher ratio is kept low so that each student may receive individual attention. This semester, older students will focus on solo performance and the fascinating "interview" theatre of performance artist Anna Deveare Smith. Students will have the opportunity to create their own characters and monologues based on their observations of people from all walks of life. The session lasts ten weeks and closes with a showcase performance to which friends and family are invited. Younger students will stretch their skills by rehearsing and presenting scenes directed by members of the University of Utah's theatre program. Students will work on scenes written specifically for young people by some of the greatest modern playwrights of Theatre for Young Audiences such as Susan Zeder, Y. York, and Cherie Bennett. While working with their director, students will explore character development and the basics of acting theory: actions, objectives, and obstacles. As always, all students receive a core acting class where they work to improve their acting technique through movement, voice work, the drama exercises. Students also receive special master classes taught by local theatre professionals and University staff and faculty members. Past master class topics have included Yoga, Tai Chi, Feldenkrais, Stage Combat, and Creative Movement. Note: Admission to this program is by audition or invitation only. To schedule an audition, phone (801) 58106984. Times are available on Wednesday, February 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 2, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
