Description
Speech and Religion clauses of the First Amendment, including regulation of political speech because of its content; speech alleged to be "unprotected" such as "fighting words", libel, obscenity, and other offensive or indecent communication; commerical speech; public forum law; content-based and content-neutral regulations; symbolic expression; "time, place, and manner" regulations in the "public forum;" regulation of money in the political campaign process; special protection for the press; prior restraints; press right of access; "gag orders." The course also covers "establishment" of religion clause and the separation of church and state; financial aid to religious institutions; "released time"; and the "free exercise" of religion.
