Description
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) is perhaps the greatest opera composer of all time. His compositions defined Italian opera for generations, and he remains one of the most performed composers on the operatic stage to this day. In this course, we will examine six of his operas: Macbeth (1847), Rigoletto (1851), Il Trovatore (1853), Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and Falstaff (1893). Students will learn about the source material for these operas, the libretto, the composition, societal impact, famous performers and performances, and stylistic differences between Verdi's early, middle, and late compositions. Though a musical background may be helpful, this course is perfect for any student with a desire to learn and an open mind (and ear).
