ATFA 6500 - Community-Based Arts Teaching

This course explores the role of the arts educator as a facilitator through readings on critical pedagogy; multicultural arts education in theatre, dance, visual arts, media, and music; and activist art. Students adapt lessons written in ATFA 6800 to teach alongside community partners off campus. In the process, students gain insight into lesson adaptation, reciprocal community-engaged learning, and the creative process. Post residency, students complete online assignments that provide an in-depth understanding of the theoretical foundations of art as a tool for personal, interpersonal, social, political, and environmental action.
