DESGR 4645 - 001 Special Topics
DESIGN & POLITICS: The Bauhaus sought to unify design principles and make art accessible to all—but not everyone shared that vision. After being shut down in Germany and forced to relocate to the United States, its legacy continues to shape how we teach and think about design today. While this philosophy was inherently political, we find ourselves once again navigating similar intersections of design and power. From Ben & Jerry’s building a brand around political protest to Emory Douglas designing revolutionary imagery for the Black Panther Party, this course explores how design has long served as a tool for resistance, persuasion, and change. Join us as we move through a loosely chronological study of the politics of design—examining key movements, historical moments, and visual strategies that have shaped public discourse. Students will learn not only the history behind these movements but also how to craft visual messages that speak to the cultures and communities ready to hear them.
