BUS 3930 - 002 American Business History

President Calvin Coolidge once said that the “chief business of the American people is business.” As business is a dominant institution in American life, an historical perspective on it greatly enriches our understanding of contemporary American society. This course takes a broad approach to “business history.” It examines the obvious triumph of the large corporation as the dominant form of business organization, the more recent finance-ization of the American economy, and some of the iconic leaders in American business history. But it also examines important underlying economic trends and ideas, technological shifts, public policies, business–government relations, the transformation of Americans into “citizen consumers,” and the difficulty of ensuring “security” for citizens in a market society. Along the way we will dip into Colonial America, the Industrial Revolution, the Civil War, the Age of the Robber Barons, the Great Depression, the long post-World War II boom, the "deindustrialization" of the American economy since the 1970s, and the rise of the Silicon Slopes!
