This class introduces the principles of operation of several types of traditional sensors and solid state micro sensors. These are found in the majority of consumer, biomedical, automotive, aerospace, energy and robotics products. Resistive sensors are used to measure oxygen, carbon dioxide, heart rate, brain signals, strain, high pressure, vacuum pressure, mass flow meters, temperature, sound, humidity, and position on game touch screens. Capacitive sensors are used to measure pressure, sound, accelerometers, inertial measurement units (IMUs), earthquakes, finger position on phone and tablet touch screens, e-pencils, and fingerprints. Piezoelectric sensors are used to measure blood pressure, extreme shocks, ultrasound scans, parking assistance, automatic braking, IMUs, and atomic force microscopes. Magnetic sensors are used to assist with navigation of ships and aircraft, and measure tire rotation rate, vehicle speed, crankshaft and camshaft position, pipeline clogs, proximity fuzes, medical MRIs, and hard disc drive data. Thermal sensors measure temperature from absolute zero to thousands of degrees with metals, semiconductors, or pyrometers. Electromagnetic and nuclear sensors are based upon semiconductor detectors, and spectrometers. The course covers Career Development, Research Development, and Network/Mentoring Development and is variable credit, allowing students to select assignments from each area to best fit their interests and needs. Career Development includes creation of an Individual Development Plan (IDP), team and leadership skills, preparation for career fairs, interviews with stakeholders to explore career options, and more. Research Development is based on the Lean Canvas approach which encourages research students to explore their research area not only in the traditional way (professional literature) but also business and patent literature, and direct interviews/visits with professionals working in their field who may later be users of their research output. This course provides an introduction to both classical and modern coding theory. Specific goals include: (1) Learn the classical codes including linear block codes, convolutional codes, cyclic codes, BCH codes and Reed Solomon codes (used in CD and DVD). (2) Develop theoretical and practical skills in the design of error control encoders/decoders. (3) Study modern codes including turbo codes, low-density parity-check codes, and polar codes which are integral to current wireless standards. (4) Gain experiences in the practical applications of iterative encoding/decoding techniques in wireless communications.
