OSC 5850 - 001 Responsible Operations

As any business grows, so too does its social and environmental impact. Increases in sales volume invariably requires more raw materials, which in turn necessitates additional natural resources and energy. Workers, meanwhile, are often hard pressed to earn living wages and are frequently required to put in overtime or suffer the consequences when orders decline. It is difficult to understand how such a system can be considered “sustainable”. Instead, businesses that operate with a sense of responsibility and create goals to reduce their impact are often those viewed most favorably by an increasingly idealistic set of customers. Regardless of how a person or a corporation feels about global warming and climate change in the current political landscape, the reality of commerce is that the environment and the people working within supply chains are often exploited. Whether it’s business disregarding governmental regulations and polluting the air and/or local waterways, or employees in foreign countries that are paid below a living wage or are subject to inhumane or unsafe working conditions, a higher standard of responsibility is needed to ensure corporations do the right thing. This course will provide examples from the apparel, footwear, electronics, and food industries of how responsible supply chains differ from the conventional. What consistent hallmarks are found in a responsible supply chain and what strategies do leading companies use to create the products they market to their social and environmentally minded customers? What role do supplier dynamics play, and how does the current landscape of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) impact how these companies operate in their respective markets? Carbon neutrality, circularity, and certifications all play critical roles in achieving a greater degree of responsibility than those companies who simply operate with price, minimum order quantity, and lead time in mind.
