PRTW 318 - 001 NR-Whitewater Kayak II
This pool class is for students to become proficient with basic kayaking strokes and skills and to become more familiar with basic river safety considerations, river classifications and whitewater paddling resources. Previous kayaking experience is required. Completion of the Beginning Kayaking class is recommended but at a minimum, the student should be able to maintain balance in a solo kayak, brace, paddle forward, backward, turn and stop the boat at will. In the process, we will get some exercise and have some fun. Class meets in the HPR Natatorium Sept 26, Oct 3, 17, 24, 31, Nov 7, 14 only. Attendance at 1st class meeting is mandatory. Unplug, let go, and find your Zen in a nature-based setting in this introductory class. We will focus on forgetting about "what's next”, making the connection between mind, body, and spirit, and how we can more freely do this in nature by having a full sensory experience through sights, sounds, smells, etc. Students will also learn about camping (with Leave No Trace) and making healthy lifestyle choices. Students will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to enjoy entry-level paddleboarding, hiking, as well as practicing yoga both on land and on the water. Overnight camping, outdoor cooking, hiking, and stand-up paddleboarding will be covered in this class. Class meets on-campus on September 5 only. Attendance at the first class meeting is mandatory.
