DENT 7264 - Oral Surgery II

The principles of Oral Surgery 2 course advances the D2 student into more complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The student is introduced to problems and procedures beyond a general scope of oral surgery practice that he/she may be faced with in their practice. A variety of methods of therapy will be discussed with advantages and disadvantages of each. The student will be introduced to the management of patients with various medical problems in a more in depth fashion and how disease impacts the patient’s treatment, risks involved, precautions and preventive strategies that are discussed during consultation along with consent protocols. The course continues to prepare students for rotations through oral surgery in their D2, D3 and D4 clinical years of training by improving their manual dexterity, reviewing head and neck anatomy, biomedical sciences, and further didactic preparation for the National Boards Part II.. In addition, the anesthetic sedation continuum concept will be reviewed with emphasis on appropriate pharmacologic and physiologic effects on the cardiovascular, pulmonary, nervous system, and immune systems. Monitoring requirements, as well as medical complications and their treatment will be discussed. This continuum will be applied to the pediatric, adult and special needs patient population. Nitrous oxide administration will be included for competency.
