Description
This course is designed for PhD students in Rehabilitation Science. Students should enter the course with knowledge of rehabilitation theory in at least one rehabilitation field. Using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as a framework (see figure below), this course will focus on theories and constructs related to rehabilitation within the domains of personal factors, environmental factors, and activities and participation. Each of these domains will be covered across a 3-week module and tied to an assignment. Additional components of the ICF (i.e., health condition, body functions and structures) will be touched on but not covered in depth in this course; students will incorporate these areas into discussions and assignments as relevant to their particular area of interest within rehabilitation science. Through reading, discussion, and writing, students will consider a range of theories and constructs relevant to rehabilitation science, assess the application and integration of theory within existing rehabilitation literature, and apply applicable theories to their focus area within rehabilitation. Select theories will be highlighted in the course, but students are encouraged to explore and identify additional theories relevant to their specific areas of interest.
