Weight regulation, dieting, and obesity are commonly referenced in the media, at the gym, and in everyday life. However, the popular views of weight and weight control are not always scientifically sound. This course will delve into the biology of weight regulation and will cover topics including the neuroscience of feeding, the physiology of weight control, fad diets, and weight loss treatments. By the end of this course, students should be able to determine which mainstream ideas surrounding weight are supported by science and which are not. The course will be primary literature based and will empower students to read and understand the main concepts from research papers. This course will use a combination of team-based learning, guided reading assignments, discussions, activities, and formal and informal presentations.
