Description
A 2-week clinical rotation for visiting students considering a career in anesthesiology. Didactic activities include weekly conferences, case presentations and discussions, outside reading, and competency-based learning. In addition to honing skills such as management of the airway and gaining access to and supporting the circulation, students gain an introduction to advanced airway techniques and experience in the clinical science of anesthesiology and critical care as it relates to the medical management of the surgical patient. Students will be introduced to subspecialty anesthesiology, such as the obstetric, acute pain, outpatient, PACU, or out-of-OR anesthesia teams. During the course students will complete coursework and assessments in peripheral IV placement, bag-mask ventilation, and preoperative assessment. They will self-select 1-2 additional competencies germane to the practice of anesthesiology and, through a combination of self-directed learning, resident and faculty instruction, mentored practice, and assessment, identify actionable strategies to move toward independent practice. Students will be graded on fund of knowledge, clinical performance, and a final exam.
