OSHER 342 - Salty Science of Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is a unique, understudied, and underestimated national landmark. As one of the most extreme ecosystems of the world, where life is tested at its limits, this lake provides new territory for exploration. Once an ancient inland sea, the Great Salt Lake has a rich history, both geological and human. Today it is a critical site for migratory birds, an important resource for industry and recreation, and a valuable laboratory for learning about the biology and chemistry of hyper-saline environments. Our goal is to connect each student to their own understanding of the lake through the interdisciplinary lenses of science, art, policy, and the humanities.
