PRTL 120 - 001 NR-Outdoor Cooking & Camping


This course focuses on outdoor cooking and camping at a front-range campground. Students will learn about different cooking techniques and tools, such as a two-burner stove, whisperlight backpacking stoves, canister stoves, and/or dutch ovens. Students will learn about campsite selection, camping equipment, and how to prepare for their own camping adventures. Class meets on-campus on May 25th only. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be June 17th-19th. Move beyond taking photos with your phone and learn the basics of landscape photography while exploring one of the many scenic areas Utah has to offer. Locations change each semester and will be announced at the beginning of each semester. Overnight (car) camping and hiking will be a part of this class. PRTL 258 - 001 Day Hikes & Dark Skies


This course will take us into Capitol Reef National Park and surrounding public lands to explore a sampling of trails, buttes, vistas, and the celebrated dark skis of Southern Utah. From our basecamp, we will venture out by foot during the day to explore the wildlands in and around Capitol Reef National Park. At night, we will journey deep into the cosmos to study the dark skies of Southern Utah, explore indigenous interpretations of constellations, and learn why our state has more dark sky parks than any other in the nation. This course has two pre-trip meetings, day hikes, dark sky exploration, and overnight camping. Camping is required. Class meets on-campus on May 17th and at the Clark Planetarium (downtown SLC) on May 24th. Attendance at both class meetings is mandatory. Field experience will be from June 3rd-5th. This course is the first in a three-part series to teach students canyoneering skills. Skills that will be covered include the ACA Core Skill standards such as basic knots, intro to anchors and rigging, rappelling, belaying, self-rescue, trip planning, canyon rating system, canyon logistics and safety, partner captures, moving through canyons, Leave No Trace ethics and much more. This course has two pre-field trip class meetings. Attendance at both class meetings (prior to field trip) is mandatory. Drops not possible after 2nd day following the first class meeting.
