HONOR 2114 - Honors Core in Intellectual Traditions: History of Medicine

This thematic Intellectual Traditions course traces concepts of wellness and illness, as well as practices of caring for human bodies, from the ancient world to today. Disease is universal, but the illness experiences of humans have varied throughout time and across different cultures. This course will compare primary texts drawn from around the globe, even as we trace persistent traditions through time. We will ask how categorizations of human bodies by gender and sex, race and ethnicity, and class and religion, have shaped how medical conditions are conceptualized and treated. We will compare how different structures of power and authority set the stage for medical treatment.
