OSHER 112 - Breaking the Rules: Building Toward War and After in Early Twentieth-Century Art

This course covers artists and movements from the first half of the twentieth century, including the Fauves (Matisse and Derain), German Expressionism and Die Brucke (Kirschner and Nolde), Der Blaue Riter (Marc and Kandinski), and Cubism (Picasso and Braque). Explore The Armory Show, held in 1913 New York City and heralded as the time when Modern art came to America, as well as Futurism by Severini, Balla, and Boccioni. We will look at reactions to World War I by DADA, Duchamp, Arp, Hanna Hoch, and Schwitters, including revolution and war in Russia, the movements Suprematism (Malevich), Constructivism (Tatlin), and De Stijl (Piet Mondrian and Rietveld). From there, we will explore Surrealism (de Chirico, Dali, Magritte, Ernst, Oppenheim, and Miro). Learn about Seeking the Universal and sculpture as social commentary (Dorothea Lange, Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Grant Wood, Benton, Orozco, and Rivera), Social Realism and the rise of dictators, plus milestones in architecture (Gropious, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and F.L. Wright).
