OSHER 402 - An American Woman Sculptor in the West: The Early 20th Century Career and Travels of Evelyn Longman

Evelyn Longman, the first female sculptor inducted to the National Academy of Design and one of only a few women working in monumental sculpture during the early 20th century, based her career out of studios in New York City and Connecticut. However, her travel and work in the American West and Midwest are well documented in personal photo albums, business and personal correspondence, and other sources, and shed light on the experience of women artists and on Longman's ambition and character. Class members will practice close looking skills for object/image study and reflective writing skills for deeper engagement and mindfulness. We will learn about the fascinating life of a largely unknown and very productive 20th century female sculptor. Wherever Evelyn Longman worked, she had fun, enjoyed the company of interesting people, and made great art. Come along for travels with Evelyn!
