LING 6040 - Introduction to Sociolinguistics

Students will be introduced to the field of sociolinguistics, the study of language use in social contexts. We will examine how social factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and social class influence linguistic behavior and, conversely, how linguistic patterns can serve to identify, and also to stigmatize or privilege language users and speech communities.
