Description
This course serves as an introduction to and intensive exploration of topics in the “Black Atlantic,” a transnational, transhemispheric approach to understanding the confluence of British, American, African, and Caribbean cultures that emerged in the Atlantic world during and after the era of colonialism and chattel slavery, flourishing through the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries and even to the present day. Topics include race, economics, trade, piracy, empire, identity, freedom and resistance, creolization and hybridization, literature, art, food, and music.
