SOC 6845 - Sociology of Development

This graduate-level seminar provides an overview of theoretical and empirical work on major themes in the sociology of development. The theories and research engaged examine large-scale social change, globalization, and the concomitants and determinants of development patterns across world regions, countries, and zones of global economy. Major emphasis is placed on variation in the development trajectories of low- and high-income countries. Possible topics include theories and debates within the development literature; socioeconomic development; state formation; class formation; racial/ethnic and gendered divisions of labor; social and economic inequality (within and across countries); global commodity chains; global relations/global networks; and trade, foreign direct investment, and debt.
