Animal Farm, by George Orwell, and The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell, are not about animals or birds. Rather, they delve into the questions of how deeply an individual copes with loss of faith in either an institution or a belief in God. Animal Farm's inhabitants believe in working for a common, democratic good. The humans in The Sparrow bring God to others. What happens when idealism and belief are crushed? What, if anything, does the spirit cling to when hope is gone? Both novels should lend themselves to great discussions.
