OSHER 793 - Our Great Salt Lake

Great Salt Lake is a unique, understudied, and underestimated national landmark. As one of the extreme ecosystems of the world, where life is tested at its limits, this lake provides new territory for exploration. Once an ancient inland sea, Great Salt Lake has a rich history, both geological and human. Today it is a critical site for migratory birds, an important resource for industry and recreation and a valuable laboratory for learning about the biology and chemistry of hyper-saline environments. Our goal is to connect each Osher member to an understanding of the lake through the interdisciplinary lenses of science, art, policy, and the humanities. For those who have previously taken this course, please note that we change the syllabus each time it is taught.
