PBHLT 6500 - Public Health Systems & Services

An introduction to the field of public health, including history, philosophy, values, core functions and the ten essential services. A comparison of the organization, structure, and function of health care, public health, and regulatory systems, both nationally and internationally, with emphasis on the effects of globalization and the burden of disease. Students will discuss the policy-making process, population needs, the science of prevention in population health, and major causes/trends of morbidity and mortality in relevant communities. Emphasis on the importance of evidence-based practice in the field of public health. Public health professionals from local and state health departments, non-profit organizations, and academia provide varied insights on public health programs and careers.
