Description
Completed in 19 BCE, the Aeneid is a masterpiece of ancient Roman poetry and one of the great epics of Western literature. This nearly 10,000-line poem by the Augustan era poet, Virgil, tells the mythical foundation story of Rome. Many adventures confront Aeneas, a survivor of the Greek sack of Troy. He wanders across the Mediterranean has a tragic love affair with Dido (the queen of Carthaginia), and takes part in wars in Italy that culminate in the birth of Roman civilization.
