PRTW 323 - 001 NR-Sea Kayaking
This is an intro to sea kayaking course which will include boat packing, basic paddle strokes, rescue techniques, overnight camping, local geological and historical education and Leave No Trace practice. This four-day adventure will take place on Lake Powell where we will get into the rhythm of gliding kayaks, paddle blades carving through the water, and starry nights like you've never seen. PRTW 332 - 001 Canoe Labyrinth Canyon
This class will focus on the basics of canoeing, hiking and camping while learning Leave No Trace backcountry travel ethics. The field portion of this class will take place over Fall Break October 11 – 15th. Students will also learn about the natural and human history of the canyon. Attention will be given to contemporary resource management challenges and current user conflicts. In addition, the course will focus on risk management, consumerism, and environmental ethics. The field trip involves being outdoors in a desert environment, being on the river in canoes the entire trip and camping in tents in undeveloped campsites along the river. Expect daytime temperatures between 50 to75 degrees and nighttime temperatures between 25 to 40 degrees. The field trip involves extensive canoeing and some hiking, and this may be physically challenging to some. Students should be in decent physical condition with the ability to walk 4 miles and swim 200 yards. Travel will normally be at a conservative pace, although adjustments due to weather or other conditions may be needed. Students are responsible for supplying their own meals, cooking equipment and camping gear which can all be rented from Outdoor Adventures on campus. Field trip on 8/25/17 - 8/27/17. Overnight camping. This introductory class is designed for students to unplug, let go, and find their Zen in a nature based setting Focusing on forgetting about “what’s next”, making the connection between mind, body, and spirit and how we can more freely do this in nature by having a full sensory experience through sights, sounds, smells, etc. Students will also learn about camping (w/LNT) and making healthy living and lifestyle choices. Students will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to enjoy entry level paddle boarding, hiking, as well as incorporating and practicing yoga both on land and on the water. Overnight camping, cooking outdoor, hiking and stand-up paddle boarding will be covered in this class.
