Description
Who paints whom, and why? A portrait is a negotiation between a sitter, an artist, and maybe a third party who's paying the bill. It's an historical document, often intended to send an explicit message. It may also be a great work of art. This course will contrast works from a wide variety of times and places, asking students to look at the ways artists engage with human subjects in their work.
