Description
The practice of polygamy - both historically and in contemporary society - is rarely well understood, yet it has had a profound impact on this region's cultural milieu. A series of speakers will offer an opportunity to investigate the historical, cultural, and social issues surrounding the practice. Discussion will include the historical period from 1840 until 1910, when the practice was removed from the canon of Mormon theology, and continue to the emergence of various current sects. Lecturers will include individuals living in polygamous communities as well as those who have left. The course will not address religion specifically, but rather only insofar as it influenced family practices and community life.
