The original Beaumarchais play was banned in Vienna. Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte, rewrote it to achieve the approval of Emperor Joseph II. With Mozart's music, it has become a cornerstone of the standard operatic repertoire. The Marriage of Figaro continues the plot of Beaumarchais' The Barber of Seville and recounts a single "day of madness" in the palace of Count Almaviva, near Seville.
