This course will explore the topic of female friendship through careful reading and discussion of two important novels. Sula by Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison is the story of two African American girls who become women, sharing a bond that survives a dreadful secret, unforgettable brutality, and an unforgivable betrayal-- or does it? Cat's Eye by Canadian author Margaret Atwood provides a powerful perspective on the lasting impact of "mean girls" on the life and work of the controversial painter, Elaine Risley.
