Description
The key to becoming a proficient bird watcher is understanding the general impression of size and shape (also known by the acronym GISS) of the bird. These are characteristics that enable bird watchers to accurately identify the bird. Through in-class lessons and field trips students will develop skills that allow them to classify and identify birds based on plumage, song, behavior, habitat, and season. In-class lessons focus on identifying birds, selecting good gear, getting involved in local birding groups, participating in citizen science, and becoming familiar with online and print resources. Three field trips to various habitats reinforce the learning.
