This 24 hour course meets all AAA guidelines. We will cover all the basics of avalanche hazard awareness, decision making, terrain selection, companion rescue, and snow stability assessment. The course will be 40 percent classroom based, and 60 percent field based. We will travel in the backcountry, in and around avalanche terrain. As well, during one of the field session days, the Brighton Ski Resort will be used to help identify techniques on how to travel safely in the backcountry when using lift access. We will be in the field February 5-7. In addition to that first class meeting, class will also meet on campus for a few hours of February 5th and 6th before heading out to the field. This class is for snowboarders looking to experience the back-country via split-board. Course focuses on equipment, techniques, and knowledge needed to become a competent winter back-country traveler on a split-board. Students will be introduced to the setup and use of split-boards, the equipment and logistics of back-country touring, and avalanche safety as it relates to split-boarding.
