Description
Are the portrayals of lawyers and the judicial system in film realistic, or do movies reflect what filmmakers - and the public - believe about that system? After viewing and discussing Anatomy of a Murder, Witness for the Prosecution, Twelve Angry Men, To Kill a Mockingbird, A Man for All Seasons, The Verdict, and A Civil Action, students will have a more accurate understanding of the work of lawyers in both the criminal and civil legal systems and how those systems have tackled the complex cultural issues of society. Class analysis will help students understand the styles and techniques used by film makers to enhance the use of reason, passion and emotional appeal in the legal dramas studied, and will see the parallel between a film maker and a trial lawyer as each works to prepare and present a compelling and emotion-packed story. To enhance class discussion, students are responsible for obtaining and watching films at home before class . Check for availability at your public library or online sources such as Amazon and Netflix.
