Description
This seminar surveys the story of Islam in the United States since the 17th century, focusing on the lives of Muslim Americans as they've moved from being on the edges of UC culture to being central actors on our political stage. Course content includes the exploration Islamic rituals and beliefs, experiences of Muslims in the US and Islamic stereotypes. It also includes the study the religious lives of Muslims and America's political response to the "threat" of radical Islam. This will be done with guest lectures and touring local mosques and schools. Presented as a case study of religious diversity rather than an alien of foreign faith.
