PHIL 5110 - 001 Ancient Medieval Phil
This class investigates Aristotle?s views about becoming and being (exploring core texts found in the Categories, Physics, Metaphysics, and On Generation and Corruption) and how they relate to his views about becoming and being good (exploring core texts found in On the Soul and Nichomachean Ethics). There will also be secondary readings highlighting intriguing scholarly debates on these issues, and key areas of discussion will draw on connections with contemporary biology and ethics. We will see how Aristotle responds to the concerns of his predecessors, defending the being of organisms as uncompromised by the fact that they become, and promoting an understanding of the good life for human beings that is consonant with (and indeed requires) their undergoing becoming.
