ARTH 4060 - Art and Politics in Modern China

This course examines the visual culture of China's long twentieth century, a period that witnessed the fall of the imperial system, the Republican Revolution, the rise of Communism and the growing prominence of the Chinese economy on the global stage. How did the representation, function and meaning of images change during this tumultuous time? We investigate this question by looking at a variety of visual forms, including traditional fine art, political propaganda, commercial advertising and the cinematic image.
