OSHER 654 - Middle East: Paths to Conflict

A variety of characters have created multiple, almost continuous conflict in the Middle East since World War I, sometimes inadvertently, sometimes intentionally. Each class day participants will examine a particular segment of the modern history of the Middle East to see who was involved, what they did, why, and how their actions have contributed to the situation there today. Students will learn about the people that populate Middle Eastern countries, religious movements, political movements, kings and dictators, and the intrigues of European and American diplomats and companies. Each session will culminate with a class discussion. Lists of recommended reading and movies/videos for those wishing to learn more about specific course topics will be provided.
