OSHER 433 - Italian Music Through Five Centuries

A survey of various styles and genres which flourished from the 16th through the 20th century. We will explore "The Counterpoint Crowd" (Palestrina and Gabrielli), "Baroque I" (Monteverdi and Corelli), "Baroque II" (Vivaldi, Scarlatti, and Pergolesi), "Bel Canto" (Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini), "Romanticism" (Verdi and Puccini), and "20th Century" (Respighi and Berio). Members of the class will be invited to prepare and present short reports on related topics. Musical literacy is not required. Benvenuti!
